Invented by architect Alfred Mosher Butts in 1938, Scrabble has become one of the world's most popular games. It has since been adapted into various languages, with the distribution of letters on tiles depending on the frequency with which they appear in the language. One can now find Scrabble sets in Afrikaans, Arabic, Catalan, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Romanian, Russian, Malaysian, Slovak, Turkish and Welsh - to name just a few!

An interesting variation of Scrabble is 'Upwords'. It is based on the same principle of placing lettered tiles on a board, the difference being you can stack letters one on top of the other to create new words. Makes for a fun game for the kids on a lazy Sunday afternoon while the oldies are sitting with furrowed brows around a proper game of Scrabble (not to say that adults can't enjoy a good round of Upwords!).
